Van Halen's David Lee Roth: Don't Call It a Reunion

After several recent furtive tries, the reunion between the Van Halen brothers Eddie and Alex and former frontman David Lee Roth has been one of the most anticipated in rock since the Roth departed the group after 1984's eponymous album and subsequent tour. Now that the threesome have announced they will rejoin forces to embark on a tour that kicks off Sept. 27 in Charlotte, N.C. -- along with Eddie's son Wolfgang, who will be playing bass in this lineup -- Roth clarified, "This is not a reunion; this is a new band."

That was just one of several memorable quotes that emanated from an L.A. press conference Monday morning where Roth, whose shtick may not have played on radio (as his jokes about his failed stint as an on-air personality revealed), reminded those in attendance why rock 'n' roll is a better thing with his color and bravado back in the scene.

Walking in with Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang to the strains of the band's 1984 smash 'Jump,' Roth waved to the assembled press and, like the most skilled of politicians, shook hands on his way from the back of the conference room to the stage. Serving as the band's and the conference's emcee, he welcomed everybody, got in a couple of quick jokes and then said, "I'd like to start with this" before hugging Eddie, to the delight of many in the room.

For all Diamond Dave's humor, which included jabs at Bono, Michael Jackson and the Police, the crowded room was ultimately gathered to receive news of the impending tour, after all. Roth promised that the reunited Van Halen would not disappoint. "The bar is set unbelievably high," he said. "We know what your expectations are. Are you prepared for it to be better than it ever f***ing was?"

Maybe the most surprising sentiment came from Eddie Van Halen after Roth spoke about the band's upcoming plans. After Roth said, "Saving the world is Bono's job. We just want to save a hundred cities; then we want to save Europe; then I want to talk to you about Hong Kong. Then we make an album; lots of big dreams here, lots of ambitions." Eddie simply added, "Just know this: We are a band; we will be continuing."

As for what fans can expect on the tour, Roth says it will be vintage Van Halen. "We've got 25 of your greatest hits, all the favorites that you've been hearing tearing out of the back of a pickup truck at the Burger King drive-thru for how many summertimes?" he spieled. "It's all very well intact; the same s***ty attitude with a whole new look, stereo sound in hi-fi style."

Sorry but I have no respect for VH since the childish way they kicked Sammy out. And then invited Dave back. And then kicked him out. Valerie Bertinelli was smart to get rid of Eddie. They can kiss my tush before I'm buying tix.

They should call it "3/4ths of Van Halen". The Van Halen Albums I own say "Michael Anthony" on bass. Just because Michael is the latest victim of Edward Van Halens' pissin match, Eddie is an ass for not having Michael in this tour. Michael is not Dead. There is no excuse to not have him be a part of this. IF you want to give them your hard earned 300 dollars for a ticket, it's your loss. ME, I will save my money.

I am glad the original VH are touring again. Sammy Hagar was awesome too. I grew up listening to VH, having gone to many concerts and David Lee Roth is a great show man. Congrats!

I am glad the 'original' VH are touring again. Sammy Hagar was definitely awesome, too. I grew up listening to VH, having gone to many concerts and David Lee Roth is a great front show man. Congrats!

Isn't this a beautiful thing. Something we've all been waiting for since 1984. How can anybody blame Ed or anyone else, this happened to the Beatles and many more great bands. These guys took the time to settle it down, and put it back up. It happens in this industry. Thank you David for helping.
God Bless, the very best!!!
Ed, Dave, do it in Tahoe, or Reno.

on the subject of the new van halen.
valerie broke up the 1 st van halen. just like yoko broke up the beatles.
when will people give a band a break. even through they went thier seperate ways on the break up. van/hager and david lee put out some amazing songs on thier own.
lets wait and hear what the new van halen sounds like, every body should wait for a new album from van halen. then everybody can make thier opions known

Eddie VanHalen STOLE money on the 2004 tour. He was a waste, his guitar playing was a waste and he was wasted the whole tour. This sad sack of a band should be playing cocktail lounges in seedy hotels. Don't they know that this tour is going to be a colossal disaster? Any of you reading this that pays more than one dollar to see these bloated, over the hill, bald (DL Roth) stooges in concert will have wasted a hard earned buck.

Sorry guys you already tried a comeback with "Diamond Dave" and that was shortly abrupted because he needed some "polishing". And as for this being "Vintage Van Halen"??? Are you f__king nuts?? How the Hell can it be if Michael Anthony is not there??? (No offense Wolfgang) Thank God Michael is playing with Sammy, I would much rather spend my money on them, than RUNOFF at the mouth Dave. I'm glad for everyone who has been waiting for this but, like I said they already tried and failed. It's too bad Dave has to be such an idiot.
